Mediation is a process in which the parties attempt to resolve issues without the need for a court hearing or trial. The mediator acts as an impartial facilitator who facilitates dialogue, assists in identifying and evaluating various options to solve the areas of disagreement and works with the parties to achieve an agreement after both parties understand the various options available to them.
Parent Coordination/Case Management is a child-focused alternative dispute resolution process in which a mental health professional, with training in child development, high conflict parenting, and mediation assists parents to implement their parenting plan by facilitating the resolution of their disputes in a timely manner, educating parents about children’s needs, and making recommendations to help parents resolve issues on which they cannot reach a mutually agreeable decision. The overall objective of parent coordination is to help parents develop a more effective style of communication where they can focus on the business of parenting rather than repeatedly re-visit the personal conflicts that contributed to the dissolution of their relationship.
